The novel itself was a surprise because I've always been led to believe that Thomas Hardy plots are incredibly dark. It's not that this isn't at times, but there are many rays of sunshine here amidst the gloom.

Excellent classic novel by Thomas Hardy. Not as emotionally wrenching as Tess, but also not quite as engaging, perhaps for the same reason. I love Hardy's depiction, both in Tess of the D'Urbervilles and in this book of British farm life in centuries past. His scenes come through as quaint, idyllic, and pastoral, but never boring. Would recommend to anyone who loves the classics.
