Though this is but the first in a series of books about Anne, it stands alone quite nicely.
When Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan to help them on the farm in their old age it’s a surprise to their neighbors. But they, themselves, are surprised to find that the orphan they get is not the strong boy they requested but a skinny, red-haired, highly imaginative 10-year-old girl. I chose to revisit Anne of Green Gables for the Literary Exploration challenge. It was one of my favorite books as a kid, and I was interested to see how the book compared to my memory.

The initial chapters were like a reunion. Anne, Matthew and Marilla jumped off the page, and I quickly remembered why I liked them so much. Who wouldn't love Anne's imagination, or Matthew's quiet strength, or Marilla's moments of humor? They are fantastic characters, and it was so great to meet them again.

I am keeping this a 4 star. I really enjoyed reading it again. I hardly remembered anything. I was obsessed with the old tv series as a child as well. Anne is delightful and spunky, reading about all her misadventures was fun. I also loved seeing Marilla grow as a character. I hope to continue on.
