Great expectations. Who among us does not have, or at least have the desire to have, great expectations? While reading Giraffe, I realized that I had never read this Dickens, even though I knew who Pip and Miss Havisham were. A delightful read. This edition has words and phrases that are no longer in common use footnoted.
I've attempted to read this book multiple times before, after watching the Ethan & Gwyneth movie. Over the years, its meaning of "great expectations" has stayed with me. Finally, I finished it via an audiobook.
It was relatable to see Pip navigating life - trying to figure out whom to trust, learning that love can be given freely, caring about social status, seeing beyond first impressions, etc.. Even the side characters are unforgettable. ...more

It was okay. I think its themes are meant more for a YA audience.
