Great expectations. Who among us does not have, or at least have the desire to have, great expectations? Pip finds himself early in life without any expectations, but with a strong desire for great ones. What we don't realize until later is that he also cares very much where those great expectations come from. While reading Giraffe, I realized that I had never read this Dickens, even though I knew who Pip and Miss Havisham were. A delightful read. This edition has words and phrases that are no longer in common use footnoted.

I've attempted to read this book multiple times before, after watching the Ethan & Gwyneth movie. Over the years, its meaning of "great expectations" has stayed with me. Finally, I finished it via an audiobook.
It was relatable to see Pip navigating life - trying to figure out whom to trust, learning that love can be given freely, caring about social status, seeing beyond first impressions, etc.. Even the side characters are unforgettable.
