If you gave me this book without the cover and didn't tell me it was by Jane Austen, never in a million years would I have guessed that it was by Jane Austen.
I don't know…I see a lot of my friends and others who gave this 4 or 5 stars, and I don't get it??? I didn't get anything of the usual Austen wit and wisdom, intricate character work, or incisive plot. I have finally read Lady Susan, after having read and reread Austen's other, full length novels over the years, and having recently seen the movie based on this story. I was pleasantly surprised. It is so different in style and subject than her other stories, a biting description of an unscrupulous and manipulative but beautiful and clever woman, and the people in her orbit for a few months. I so much wish Jane had had the chance to finish and refine this story. I couldn't put it down, but it was really hard to have it abruptly finish. At least there was a synopsis of what would have followed. Time to watch "Love and Friendship" again, now that I've read the story it was based on.

Hilarious as ever. I started a re-listen of the Audible edition as a bedtime story and then realized I just really wanted to read this again!
I can now say I’ve read the entire Austen oeuvre. Unfortunately I left the one I liked least for last.
Didn't like this one as much as most of her works, but disliked it less than Emma.
