Somehow I managed to miss this book in school, along with the film version. While I knew vaguely that it didn't end well, I'm so glad no one ever spoiled the particulars of the story for me--what a gut punch. I read the book in a day and couldn't put it down. Structurally it's pretty much perfect, and the characterizations are complex and real. Steinbeck wins me over every freaking time.

I had a very hard time rating this. It seems better than many books I have given 5 stars, but in the end, I’m going to have to insist that one shouldn’t rate books purely on their literary merit but in stead rate them according to the significance they have for you. 4 stars.
