“I’ve always been able to see the savageness beneath the veneer of society. It’s not so very far beneath the surface, no matter where you go” (Fen 138).
Loved it, an excellent read that I couldn’t put down. I knew nothing about Margaret Mead and New Guinea’s Sepik River tribes, yet the characters and story sucked me in. My first King, I found her style engaging and impressive. There is a lot of depth to this quick read; savor it.

I enjoyed this, but am befuddled as to why it was chosen as one of the five best novels of 2014 by the New York Times. It's an intriguing story, told with poetic yet straightforward language, but I didn't think it was anything incredibly special. It reminded me somewhat of The English Patient, especially in its final pages.
