I did not think I would like this book. The entire story is completely from Alice's POV and is basically her day to day life as she slowly loses her memory. So it is very repetitive at times. None of this sounded interesting to me. But thanks to a reading challenge I had to read it. Now I am so glad I did. Once I started the audiobook I could not stop listening. This book is sooooo sad. The story of a brilliant Harvard Linguistics Professor diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease shortly after her 50th birthday. It chronicles her decline month by month over the course of about 18 months. It is well written and obviously well researched...sometimes it was a bit too clinical for me, but the author definitely knows her stuff. It shines a light on a scary and tragic disease and gives an interesting voice to those who suffer from dementia. I felt that ...more

I love books that "show" instead of "tell". So much more powerful that way. Alice is a professor of linguistics at Harvard and is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's at the age of 50. Watching her slowly unravel and lose the parts of herself that meant the most to her was heart-breaking. Told from her perspective, you see the confusion, the fear, the humiliation, the desolation. You wonder why her children and husband aren't doing more. But then you realize you don't know what they're doing. ...more

This was both a heartbreaking and heartwarming story. If you've had a family memory deal with dementia, this could be hard to read at times. It made me cry but Alice was such a strong, inspiring character, even when you saw her slipping away from her own perspective. I'll be thinking about this one (and my own loved ones lost to Alzheimer's) for a while to come. ...more
