What Members Thought
Honestly I didn't think I'd care for this book before I even started it. A book that is written in the first person POV from a dog's perspective? No thanks. BUT I stand corrected. I actually really enjoyed it. I loved Enzo and Denny. I was quickly drawn into their little lives and had a difficult time putting the book down. I felt so horrible for all that Denny had to go through and I'm glad Enzo was there for him. Of course the end had me getting choked up but I was able to contain my tears. Bu

It's the book narrated by the dog that everyone's been talking about!
At first, I was pretty sure the conceit of having a dog narrator was going to be the only thing this book had going for it, and I wasn't even sure that was going to be enough because the Enzo's voice and reasoning are a little too human to be fully believable. It doesn't feel like you're hearing a story from the dog's perspective; it just feels like it's from a person who can't talk and who people only sometimes take seriously. ...more

Everyone should have a dog like Enzo. When I started reading this, and there were frequent references to auto racing, I thought "I'm going to get bored with that." By the time I got to the end, I wanted to rent the documentary "Senna" to find out more about what gives Enzo his passion.
This is a cleverly conceived, warm and frequently humorous take on what life as a dog would be like. Enzo has his favorite television programs, his own fears, and his own way of making himself understood when impo ...more

I won't say I was disappointed, because I didn't expect much. But I found that it was very formulaic and didn't have much to say that was original. It smacked of mass market bestseller -- when I read it I could see why they were selling it at Starbucks, because it really does seem to be "written down" for the masses. None of the characters had strong presence other than the dog and the protagonist -- his wife, daughter, in-laws, etc. were all just plot devices. That said, it was a quick and an e

This book just stressed me out. It was a nice concept but the story just kept throwing bad circumstance after bad circumstance at the main characters, all of which felt a little forced. The resolutions felt the same. I was prepared for the emotional roller coaster that comes with books about pets (you always outlive them) but I couldn't handle that on top of the never-ending barrage of "unfortunate events." Maybe I just read it at a bad time. I don't know. I just didn't enjoy this book.

I got most of the way through this but just couldn't, in good conscience, finish it. There was just SO much swearing (including countless instances of the f-bomb), plus some sexuality that, while not passionate (this is from a dog's point of view, after all), didn't make up for any small nuggets of wisdom I might have unearthed in finishing the last quarter of the book.
