This is one young adult novel that didn't tend towards the notion that everything is romance and roses. To say I was continually blown away would be an understatement. After hearing such amazing things about it, I felt they could not possibly be all true, but - to my utmost surprise - they were. I must say, I didn't get the hype for this book. It's a solid enough young adult read, but I heard so many adults acting like this is the second coming of Harry Potter or worthy of comparison with great literature. I found Katniss to be a very flat main character, the writing was obviously sub-par, and the plot didn't even hook me. I don't require great characterization or even good writing when it comes to a pulpy bestseller, but I DO require a book that absorbs me.
