It's summer in Tupelo Landing, NC and soon to be 6th grade Mo LoBeau and her best friend have started a detective agency. Little did they know they'd soon be investigating a murder! Mean Mr. Jesse turns up dead in his boat and the whole town is spooked.
Tueplo Landing is a small town where everybody knows everybody and gossip runs rampant at the local diner where Mo's caregivers work. Mo doesn't know her biological parents having washed up in town during a hurricane and a large part of her time ...more

Mo LeBeau doesn't know who her mother was. She is living with an amnesiac ex-soldier referred to as The Colonel and equally eccentric Miss Lana, who lives life to the fullest. Seems the Colonel and Miss Lana take turns taking care of Mo and running a small cafe that serves as a make shift kind of community center in their small North Carolina village. All Mo knows about her past is she was rescued by the Colonel in a flood right after he was in an accident that claimed his memory. She is constan

I often feel very far from my South Carolina home, so I love books like this that allow me to visit the South of my childhood. "Lucky" is set in Tupelo Landing and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Spunky Moses "Mo" Lo Beau made her entry to Tupelo Landing as a young baby--riding on a raft during a hurricane. She was found by a couple of other newcomers to the Landing who took her in and raised her. The new young family opened a cafe in the town and were welcomed into the community with true southe

Re-reading with Aidan.....Aidan enjoyed it and wants to read the next one. Didn't make as good of a read aloud as I would have thought. Still a great read!
LOVED this book! I can totally see why this was a Newberry Honor book. Laugh out loud funny in parts, this crazy MG mystery novel reminded me of the wackiness that you find in a Carl Hiaasen, Elmore Leonard or Flavia de Luce book. Three Times Lucky is set in a small town and Mo LoBeau (GREAT character name!) is a child that washed up in a hurr ...more

I loved this book. Normally, I don't write in books. I found myself with a pencil underlining all of the truly great lines in this book. There is so much right in this story-great town, characters, and enough mysteries to keep the pages flipping. I will highly recommend this to my tweens at the library and especially to fans of Ingrid Law. I am already thinking of crafts the mother/daughter book club could work on (using glass bottle, of course).

"Trouble cruised into Tupelo Landing at exactly seven minutes past noon on Wednesday, the third of June, flashing a gold badge and driving a Chevy Impala the color of dirt. Almost before the dust had settled, Mr. Jesse turned up dead and life in Tupelo turned upside down." This is one of the best opening lines in a story I have read. Mo and her best friend, Dale Earnhardt Johnson III, decide to solve the crime. In addition to solving the murder, Mo has been trying to find out who her mother is b

This was a really good book. It's a mystery, which is something students are always wanting, and it's much more than that too. It's a story about a girl trying to find a family and an identity. I loved it.

I loved the quirky characters in this story. It was pretty much perfect up until the end, when I became confused about the Colonel's amnesia. But I can't say anymore or there will be spoilers!

I was mildly entertained by this improbable mystery, involving a bank heist, amnesia, murder, and kidnapping, and the even more improbable Southern small-town kid wannabe detective characters, Mo and Dale, who talk with a quirky sophistication way beyond their years. But a Newbery Honor book? That's the real mystery, I'm afraid. 2.5 stars. Best for grades 6-7.
