So good! I just e-mailed all of my coworkers and told them they must read this book ASAP! August has been homeschooled his whole life because of the many surgeries he has gone through to correct numerous severe birth defects. Now as he enters fifth grade, he prepares to go to regular school for the first time. Auggie is just like everyone else underneath, but on the surface he definitely stands out in a crowd. As one character puts it "Let's face it... the universe was not kind to Auggie Pullman

This book made me happy. I closed it with a smile on my face. Loved the message, the characters and the real-life accessibility of the story. All ages will get something out of Wonder.
The story is about a boy who enters school for the first time in the 5th grade. He was born with a severe craniofacial anomaly, so he's had surgeries over the years prevented him from attending school. Even with the surgeries, people are scared by his face. He's got a great family who can't agree whether going to ...more

A good, heartwarming story with a great message. Here is a children's novel that I can actually see children reading -- which is a good thing -- except that, based on the buzz I'd heard about it, I was expecting near-Newbery material along the same lines as The Wednesday Wars or Inside Out & Back Again (so that's why only three stars from me). Still, this would be a great book for parents to share with their nine- or ten- or eleven-year-old to help facilitate a discussion about friendship, kindn

This is one of the best children's books that I have read in awhile (Thanks Betsy Farquhar) August is a child with severe facial deformities attending school for the first time in the fifth grade.
I love how the author tells the story through August and the other children who come to care about him.
I would also recommend Out of Mind by Sharon Draper for a story told from the perpective of a severly handicapped but spirited and intelligent child.

This book should be required reading for all middle schoolers. It is about a disfigured boy who is attending mainstream school for the first time. Cole and I read it together and we had some good discussions on what it means to be a real friend and treating others kindly. Auggie was a good kid. I liked how when he was given the chance to retaliate he did not. And was patient and long suffering. It was a feel good book and I'll admit I cried at the part at the end where they were having the comme

a touching story with themes of bullying, acceptance, friendship, family, and courage. The story is told in different parts by several characters, and the audio was well done, featuring different narrators for each perspective.
I'm rereading this novel. Can't wait for the movie!
