Oh wow. This came across my desk in a pile of other books and I put it to the side. The dark cover, the description on the back . . . just didn't add up to "gotta read this now". Then someone mentioned I really should give it a look. So I did. I cracked the cover on the train and . . .didn't want to put the dang thing down when I got to my stop.

Utter brilliance. Overwhelming. Fantastic. What grief. What a beautiful yet disturbing book. Really enjoyed.
Sucker punched.
That's right.
I took one in the gut for Patrick Ness.
But, oh, was it worth it.
I haven't cried (more like bawled, wailed, and thrashed about) since Where the Red Fern Grows in fourth grade.
Anything that is written about this beautifully orchestrated piece of art would put A Monster Calls to shame, so I'll be brief.

When the monster shows up one night Conor isn't really afraid. He's seen worse every night in his dreams ever since his mother got sick. But this monster is different. It wants to tell him stories and eventually it wants Conor to tell his own story. One that Conor really doesn't want to tell.

There was weeping. Almost as good of a deathbed scene as Little Women .
What a beautifully sad story. You instantly want to turn to the front, reread and pay closer attention. There's so much there.
