If you liked Wintergirls, you'd love this one. It's told in verse. It's about a boy who has anorexia, and how he is working to overcome it. It's beautiful!

Jake loves weekends with his grandma. He loves singing along to songs from musicals. He loves reading aloud at the nursing home. But Jake does not love himself. In this novel in verse, Jake relates how he's let his inner voice stamp out his confidence. He struggles with an eating disorder. He wishes he would disappear.

This novel in verse is a fast read (don't be intimidated by that page count!) -- and it's poignant and moving. I really loved that most of this book was spent on Jake's healing, sh

Hits loudly

An important book for youth and anyone who works with them. So much to be taken from this one…it’s about so much more than an eating disorder. Parts are hard to read, but you are so compelled to keep going. There is simply so much to use in conversations and work with kids, from content, to writing style, to identifying how you find your light. And a pleasant surprise with the inclusion of the arts being so important in our lives.

4.5 stars. Very powerful. I listened to the audio, which was very well done. Heart wrenching story based on the author’s own experience with an eating disorder. It feels very important to anyone who feels alone and wishing to be invisible. I would highly recommend for ages 12+.

This is a powerful book about a middle-school aged boy wrestling with anorexia, depression, bullying, OCD, and the feeling of never being good enough.

I felt it powerfully illustrated mental disorders and was ultimately hopeful.

Such a good read. 4.5 stars rounded up.

A story about a 14 yo boy with anorexia in the 1990’s. It was hard to listen to the voice that only spoke ugly things to Jake in his head. He dealt with a lot. Anorexia, OCD, anxiety, depression. It was a lot of work to get to a place of healing. I was rooting for him to figure it out. Based on experiences of the author.

This novel in verse is a quick but disturbing read of a middle school boy who is dealing with eating issues. It's made even more meaningful because it's autobiographical. A good introduction to a tough topic. ...more
