I love this author and hope I am in the minority that didn't enjoy this book as much as they wanted to. I loved the setting at Chenonceau. I was just confused between it being a historical fiction book and a supernatural book. I wish it had chosen one specific genre. Crossing my fingers that my students will enjoy it, even though it wasn't my favorite. ...more

Excellent book! I love this author! She makes a very hard event in history “digestible” for young adults. I was very invested in the characters. The ghost was an extra special touch, which in my opinion fit very well in the grand scheme of the book.

Twelve-year-old Miriam (Miri) arrives home from searching for bread to purchase and discovers her mother is not there or was perhaps shot by the Nazis. I did love the lesser told story of Jewish children being sheltered by Catholic nuns however. I would recommend with ...more

Bradley is a talented writer but her talent did not shine in this book. It started out ok, with a likable character, Miri. The roundup of Jews in Paris set the scene for a good historical fiction book. But, too much of this didn't work for me, especially the ghost. That plot weakened the story in my view. I was hopeful that this would be an updated story told through the lens of 2024 thinking, but it was not. It was a disappointment. ...more
