I love this author and hope I am in the minority that didn't enjoy this book as much as they wanted to. I loved the setting at Chenonceau. I was just confused between it being a historical fiction book and a supernatural book. I wish it had chosen one specific genre. Crossing my fingers that my students will enjoy it, even though it wasn't my favorite.

Twelve-year-old Miriam (Miri) arrives home from searching for bread to purchase and discovers her mother is not there or was perhaps shot by the Nazis. Not my favorite of her books (hello, The War that Saved My Life) but I guess that's not saying much because that book I just mentioned above and it's sequel (The War I Finally Won) are OFF the CHARTS fantastic. So, anyway, something about this novel didn't hang together for me. I didn't get as clear a connection as I needed between Miri (Maria) and the historical/mystical element. Bradley is a talented writer but her talent did not shine in this book. It started out ok, with a likable character, Miri. The roundup of Jews in Paris set the scene for a good historical fiction book. But, too much of this didn't work for me, especially the ghost. That plot weakened the story in my view. I was hopeful that this would be an updated story told through the lens of 2024 thinking, but it was not. It was a disappointment.
