The 2022 Newbery winner and, wow, was it deserving! Science fiction for middle grade readers. Sort of a Giver meets the Uglies meets the movie Passengers with Mexican folklore mixed in. Petra is fabulous main character (although I felt her limited eyesight was unnecessary to the story) and there are so many wonderful surprises along the way. Highly recommend.

As fate would have it, I actually had this book at home and next up in my to-read pile when the Youth Media Awards were announced!

While I can appreciate the love this book has received, Newbery Medal included, it just wasn't a book for me. I think in part because I kept wondering what the Collective's ultimate goal actually is. I couldn’t put this book down. The writing is descriptive so I could imagine the ship, the planet and the way the humans looked. It is about white washing history that makes people uncomfortable. It is a gorgeous book. A worthy choice for the Newbery Medal.

A little bit intriguing but also kind of on the boring side. It has a pretty cover though

I can see why the message of the book is important. Not my favorite type of story though.
