I don’t read much sci-fi and middle grade sci-fi is rare so this is a great book to recommend to readers. I enjoyed the set-up of the story, the importance of storytelling, and the focus on family. This book kept reminding me of all the things I like about The Giver (sameness being the ultimate goal of the Collective). However, I did wish I had been more pulled into the story… there were a couple riveting “twists” I liked. I wish we had more information about the choices of the Collective - how ...more

In a futuristic world that is soon to become uninhabitable, 3 ships of scientists and their children are sent to a far off planet. They will be asleep for hundreds of years, but when they arrive it is hoped that they will be able to start a new and better life. Petra Pena is among the passengers - reluctantly leaving her beloved storyteller grandmother behind. But when Petra wakes up, it is to find that nothing has gone as promised. Can she find the strength within herself to begin yet again?

The 2022 Newbery winner and, wow, was it deserving! Science fiction for middle grade readers. Sort of a Giver meets the Uglies meets the movie Passengers with Mexican folklore mixed in. Petra is fabulous main character (although I felt her limited eyesight was unnecessary to the story) and there are so many wonderful surprises along the way. Highly recommend.

Last years Newbery. It was science fiction. It was interesting. I had the situation with Ebsalom figured out. It dragged in some places for me. I didn’t like the abrupt ending. It left me with more questions.

A little bit intriguing but also kind of on the boring side. It has a pretty cover though
