What an interesting concept. Singer wrote a reverso (poem read from both directions) about her cat, and decided to create several more. The effects of phrasing, punctuation, and capitalization can be seen here; but even without a more analytical study, the poems are enjoyable. The illustrations are fabulous and intriguing. Students could be encouraged to write their own reversos, and could examine the pictures to note all of the differences. Some of the techniques wore a little thin, but it's st ...more

This is an amazing, amazing book. The book features various fairy tales (one per 2 page spread) i.e., Snow White, Rapunzel, the Ugly Duckling, etc. There are two poems on each page. The second poem is a "mirror" image of the first one in that it is the exact reversal of the first poem. It is hard enough to write a good poem but to write one that can be read in two directions?! Reverso poems are interesting. While I am not a huge fan of fairy tales, I can see this as an introduction to a poetry unit for those teachers looking for something different. My favorite poem was the first reverso she wrote- about her cat. It is on the back page.

Cute idea. Familiar stories turned into poems. Might be good for poetry month.

A gift from my cousin to the boys as they start to jump into the longer bedtime stories of fairy tales and myths. Interesting idea of poems that can be reversed. Some even shift the point of view of the speaker. Could be used as entry way into fairy tale genre study or setup for lower readers. Will be useful in writing from multiple perspective while playing with language.

I think this book might be a tough sell for the younger set to read alone, but what a great teaching tool! You could easily use it to teach not only poetic forms, but also point of view, plot, and punctuation.
