Quite clever, definitely didn't see the final twists coming. The writing is also lovely. I was under the impression that this was going to be heavily steeped in fairy tales, and it IS, but goodness, I'd also put it firmly in the "horror" category. (I'm well aware that original fairy tales were often VERY dark, but this struck me as kind of next level, so I feel justified in my assessment.) Alice has never met her grandmother either, because she and her mother live on the run from “bad luck” all across the country. When word reaches them that her grandmother has died, they settle in Brooklyn, and a semblance of a normal life, until the characters from the dark tales start showing up and her mother disappears.
