While the plot is good, I'm going to focus on the fact that this story touched my heart. This is the type of story I hope children get the opportunity to discuss and not just get tested on. And wouldn't it be wonderful if principals encouraged their teachers to read this book and discuss it? The discussions would certainly center on what the reader takes to heart and the difference the characters make in having the reader realize his own words of wisdom.

Three boys set out on a journey to see their beloved teacher one last time, when she doesn't show up for their good bye party at school. So what if it involves skipping school, something they've never done before, and going way across town. They've got the perfect plan and are determined to see it through. Told in three voices, in a similar style of Because of Mr. Terupt, the stories the three boys share are both tender and humourous. Alert - You will need tissues.

Ms. Bixby is a teacher who is about to go on a hard life journey, but she doesn't let that interrupt her impact on her kids. The story is told from three points of view of three friends who set out to make one particular day her best. So much happens, and I don't want to spoil the ending. Just read it!

Yes, there are plenty of juvenile delinquent activities described in this book. But will kids think hey, I should do that!? The answer is, no, of course not. Unless they have an extraordinary young teacher who gets a very serious form of cancer and has to leave school unexpectedly and then has to leave town altogether in order to have a radical last-chance experimental form of treatment. But then you might forgive those kids for skipping school with the intention of giving sa ...more

I may be a little too emotional to write this review as I have just finished the book, so we'll see how it goes..
I am not a 6th grade public school boy, but if I was, I think that I'd have been friends with the three boys in this book...Complete geeks who end up with a fellow geek for a teacher.
On the topic of teachers, the main characters in this book say, "Everyone knows there are different kinds of teachers. The good ones. The not-so-good ones. The boring ones, the mean ones, the ones who try ...more
This was the kind of book that teachers love, and kids who really connect with their teachers might like. There's some mild swearing and a little bit of alcohol (though no drinking), but this would be a pretty good choice for 5th-7th graders.

A book about three boys and their teacher dying of cancer is a difficult book to pitch to middle grade readers. But if you've ever had a teacher that made a real difference in your life, even as a child, you'll love this book. Definitely not as morose as it sounds. Some gross humor that will appeal to kids who like gross humor (I'm trying to be gender neutral here, but the book is about three boys.) It also took me longer than usual for me to finish. I guess I didn't want to get to that last day
