Told from the perspectives of three 6th grade boys, each shares how a special teacher named Ms. Bixby positively touched their lives while at the same time planning a goodbye event focused around a few of her favorite things.
The journey to round up a few of Ms. Bixby's favorite things is full of setbacks and is thrown off track from start to finish by forces that add humor to the story. The result is that Ms. Bixby's goodbye party is far from perfect, but moving nonetheless.

We were fortunate to have Anderson visit our school in May, and at that time he gave me an ARC of the title (BTW, he does nice school visits!) The majority of the book takes place during a single day, with a few flashbacks telling the backstories of the three main characters.
There are several passages that are so wonderfully written that I marked an entire page: quotes on p 34, the explanation of belief in the tooth fairy and impossibilities, the scene in a liquor store, and passages on 208 & 2 ...more

Three boys set out on a journey to see their beloved teacher one last time, when she doesn't show up for their good bye party at school. So what if it involves skipping school, something they've never done before, and going way across town. They've got the perfect plan and are determined to see it through. Told in three voices, in a similar style of Because of Mr. Terupt, the stories the three boys share are both tender and humourous. Alert - You will need tissues.

Told from three different points of view, Brand, Steve, and Topher plan a big send off for their sixth grade teacher Ms. Bixby. Each boy has his own reasons for wanting to be part of the plan which are slowly revealed as readers near the end of the book. While they are good friends Brand is the newcomer to the threesome. Ms. Bixby is one the good ones- the teacher who make school bearable for students. Which is probably what makes the story so tearful- the good ones are missed the most. Her Bixb

A must read. Tugs at the heart; so well-written. For all those teachers - the "good ones"

A book about three boys and their teacher dying of cancer is a difficult book to pitch to middle grade readers. But if you've ever had a teacher that made a real difference in your life, even as a child, you'll love this book. Definitely not as morose as it sounds. Some gross humor that will appeal to kids who like gross humor (I'm trying to be gender neutral here, but the book is about three boys.) It also took me longer than usual for me to finish. I guess I didn't want to get to that last day
