A tender story of friendship and bravery. Friendship blossoms between 3 girls who are fighting battles of loss/abandonment, hunger and abuse. The "Three Rancheros" work together through their struggles and have adventures and self discoveries. Throughout the book there was a good balance of humor a heaviness. Though this story tugged at my heart strings and was beautifully written, it wasn't my necessarily my favorite of DiCamillo's books.

I really liked this book. The writing is beautiful. It is so introspective and poignant. I just have a hard time believing that kids will really like it. It's not heavy on plot, it's a little slow and sad. It will be interesting to see what the committee makes of it.

It's a little bit sad, a little bit amusing, a little bit silly, with a lot of wisdom and hope sprinkled throughout. I admire this author's writing. She makes things like a single light bulb, a shopping cart, and a bowl of candy corn portray human feelings and emotions. And the cat, of course! We mustn't forget Archie!

I'm a Kate DiCamillo fan, but some of hers I like more than others. This one includes her signature quirky characters, which is always great fun and smacks of her southern writers tradition, and I believe girls exploring friendship will relate to it. I find that her novels often include an elderly wise woman and (though not Dr. Meecham or Gloria Dump) DiCamillo did not disappoint. I enjoyed it, but don't expect it to win another Newbery.

There was nothing wrong with the story but I just didn't care.
