SLOB is a book with a good heart, even if it has a slightly confusing set of characters and plot lines.

This book is not what I expected. An unusually sympathetic character, Owen deals with problems with his weight (too much), his sister (a "gwab" girls who are boys), the loss of his parents, and now has to deal with someone who keeps stealing his Oreo cookies. A heartfelt look at a brilliant kid who lives outside of the mainstream and struggles between sinking below the weight of the world and truly rising above. ...more

I enjoyed reading this, but was disappointed in the ending -- it all seemed a bit too pat and a bit far-fetched. I think kids would enjoy it, though.

Owen Birnbaum, is a bully magnet. The reason is not revealed until later in the book and will take your breath away. When his cookies go missing each day he is sure it is the new kid: a psychopath. Owen is also on a personal mission. All these plot twists and turns make a touching and at times funny story of life in middle school.

Enjoyed the storyline development, really enjoy reading books by Ellen Potter- although it was nice to read realistic fiction after her Olivia Kidney/fantasy series...
