The minute I opened the first page and saw the mesmerizing art work on the cover page, I knew this was no ordinary book. Mesmerized is a fascinating look at Ben Franklin's journey to France on America's behalf and his brush with "Dr. Mesmer". Children (and possibly some under-educated middle aged teachers) will learn about the placebo effect, the derivation of the word mesmerized, and the scientific method that one of our Founding Fathers employed to run the so-called-doctor out of town. Beautifully designed, conversational in tone accompanied by eye-catching illustrations and extensive back-matter. This would make a great read aloud in a middle school science unit about the scientific method. It also fits in social studies.
This picture book is about a Ben Franklin and how he discredited a man named Dr. Mesmer who said he had a magic wand that would let people feel things they weren't really feeling. It gives a great description of the scientific method.
