I'm sure my enjoyment of this book was increased by hearing Lisa Graff at nErDcamp this summer; she was delightful! This is one of the better books I've read this summer, but I was still bothered by the fact that no one set Trent up with counseling when he clearly needed it. When you think about it, just about all of the adults in the book were well-meaning. (Although I never really understood what the PE teacher was doing. 12 year old Trent accidentally killed another boy less than a year ago, and he blames himself. Unable to talk about his feelings, he often feels the "fire" burning inside of him until it bursts forth in violence. He feels like everyone in town hates him, except one girl, Fallon, who is quite unusual. He seems to be like the baseball players who has "lost the ball in the sun". With Fallon's help and the help of a few other unexpected sources, can Trent find his way again?
