This is a book my 11 year-old self would have read over and over again.

Grades 5-8. I could not put this book down! Set in WWII, Ada and her brother live in a poor section of London. Ada has never left the apartment. She was born with a club foot and her abusive mother is ashamed of her and keeps her locked up. With the threat of German bombs, the children of London are relocated and sent to live in the countryside. An 11 year old girl with a clubfoot escapes from her abusive mother during the WWII children's evacuation of London. The book does an excellent job conveying how individuals cope with abuse and grief.

So good - great character development, particularly.
I got a slow start with this, but read the final half of the book in one sitting. Loved the backdrop of war - very important to the setting. Also enjoy how family doesn't necessarily mean those with whom you have blood connections. The last page of the book was absolutely my favorite!!
