Delightful! Something like a good Judy Blume, but without anything embarrassing.

The cover of this book made me think it would be light and fun, a fiesta. And while parts of it were humorous, this story is really about the relationship of a girl and her father and how they deal with the loss of the mother/wife. I didn't love it at the time, but now that I'm thinking more about it, I appreciate the fact that the death of the mother didn't dominate the story. Lina, the main character, goes on with her everyday life - she fights and makes up with her best friend, has her first ...more

Lina is very much a typical middle school girl dealing with all the angst and roller coaster emotions that characterize this age. In addition, her mother has passed away and she and her father are having a hard time finding their footing since her death. Her best friend is preoccupied with a boy and keeps letting Lina down. Lina is experiencing the bloom of first romance, or thinks she is, but she's not really sure. To top it off, she is failing English and can't play sports. What a mess!

Lina is a fairly typical middle school student: she lives across the street from her best friend Vanessa, she does okay in sports, she has a crush on a nice boy named Luis. However, she and her Dad are still trying to cope with her mother’s death. Her father deals with it by burying himself in books and ignoring Lina. Lina tries to get through to him, but he doesn’t notice until she starts getting in trouble and getting bad grades. Lina tries to find comfort in Vanessa, but Vanessa is distracted ...more

Lina, a tall young woman, loves socks. She has a small set of drawers that are devoted entirely to socks that she will organize and reorganize in quirky ways. Her fun loving nature extends beyond her sock collection despite the difficult teenage times she is going through. However when everything goes wrong a little communication, some cascarones (confetti eggs), and old dichos (Mexican proverbs) go a long way.

I really enjoyed this one. I loved Lina and the fun descriptions of the teenage years.

A good story; very true to middle school issues. The author is very direct about Lina's feelings toward her friend, her father, school, her boyfriend. Very satisfying read. ...more

A book short read. At times funny, but also a bit serious.
