What Members Thought
This was Lois McMaster Bujold's first novel, and is the beginning of the Vorkosigan space opera universe - which is so well known there is no point to writing yet another synopsis of it. I found nothing really original going on in concepts or world-building, but the characters are just so vivid and likeable. No wonder Bujold keeps winning Hugos. And even though this has a big romantic thread running through it, that did not overwhelm other aspects of plot. Definitely will be reading Barrayar soo

This got four stars because I did 'really like it'. I can see why Bujold went on to write much better novels. I don't mean that in a condescending way but a complimentary one. The voice is vivid, the pace fast and the story quite believeable. But mainly the characters shine. They came across as very real, particularly Aral and I liked the romance even though I see a few other reviewers didn't.
