I'm reading the omnibus edition of the trilogy. Expecting Sci-Fi, I find book 1 a classic horror. It may become SF, we'll see. The prose style reminds me of horror esp that from the 1st half of the last century.

The 2nd book starts right where the 1st ends. The only reason the separate these into 2 volumes is to make money. It makes no literary sense and annoys me.

When something is happening, I enjoy the story, though the Biologist is flat and not very likable, the latter on purpose, I think. W

Another solid book by Jeff Vandermeer. His typical fungus obsession is still visible, and this entry into his repertoire contains just as much subtle horror as his other novels. I'm excited to read the next two in this trilogy. ...more

Well written mood piece that poses lots of questions and doesn't really answer any of them. Doesn't feel action packed even though interesting things are going on all the time. Left me wanting to know more and hence inclined to try the rest of the series but have a sneaky feeling I won't come out of the experience feeling any better informed then when I first went into Area X. ...more

Not a bad book, a little strange, and thought provoking. The unreliable narrator possibly contributed to my disconnection from the characters and the mystery of the story kept me on edge. She seemed distant from her situation, and I felt like that kept me at arms length.
