there are about a billion reviews of this one so i doubt i have anything to add. the only thing i feel truly compelled to say is TYRION THE DWARF IS AWESOME! my God, i haven't read a character who is so different and so enjoyable in years. many-layered and consistently surprising, hero & antihero, generous & spiteful in equal amounts, as capable of high-handed miscalculation as he is of clever deduction, brave & loyal & vindictive... just overall a superb creation. Tyrion, you are the tops! and

This was a weird book. It's the first volume in an epic adventure, and it really does feel like that - a lot of setup, getting to know characters, laying the background of all the families. I liked the changing pov - every time it happened I would get annoyed because inevitably he would leave you in the lurch with one character, but by at least the middle of the [huge] book, you were just as happy to catch up with the character in the next chapter. I have mixed feelings about the sexualized viol

This book completely surprised me as I normally despise this crap. Jordan started good but bored me after a few books and Goodkind is just an utter failure at life. However, Martin drew me in with great characters and great story telling. I love that he was able to surprise me and keep me guessing until the last page. I'm hooked.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised by this book considering I read it in high school and really didn't like it. I guess I'm more willing to overlook somewhat disturbing plot events now that I'm a bit older.
I was also surprised that I liked so many of the characters, even those who were occasionally working at cross purposes. It was an odd place to be in knowing that a lot of the conflicts will eventually come to a head, but I wasn't confronted with them yet and my feelings about characters will pr ...more

It took me awhile to really pick this up and read it. Once I got started, I couldn't stop. What an amazing world Martin has created. It reminded me some of the Tudor novels I've read, combined with Lord of The Rings and a bit of a murder mystery thrown in. Needless to say, I loved it on many levels and can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Oh one thing I learned from this book: Martin doesn't mind killing off main characters! Man!!! I'm still sad about one of them. ...more

Even better the second time around!

Abandoned. I enjoyed what I read; it was well-written, but much like Robin Hobb's work, I'm no longer interested in being punished for liking a character.

I'd like to be able to appreciate this but ... I just can't figure out why it comes across as anything but an overly wordy doorstop. :(
