I have read this book twice, once in the early ninety's when it fist came out, and also this past January. It holds up very well, even though it made a major impact on me back then. As a founder of the whole cyberpunk genre, this novel set the bar to insurmountable heights. It is one of my all time favorite books and Hiro Protagonist one of my favorite fictional characters. Pirates, the mafia, drugs, virtual reality, viruses and religion are just a few of the topics explored in this novel. The narrative goes at a fair pace and Hiro the main character I found to be quite acceptable. What the cover does not mention is his partner in crime so to speak, Y.T. who aids him in a number of capers and is present throughout much of the book. I found her quite an entertaining character. I suspect that this author is far too intelligent for me as he tends to go into long theoretical musings that pass far above my head, but when he's not doing that the book is great. The characters are fun and the action fairly gripping. The author has some great ideas and a lot of originality, but I would enjoy his books a lot more without the philosophical/pseudo-scientific treatise. ...more

Wow, what a ride! I can hardly believe this was written 20 years ago. This was my first Stephenson book, and while I know that not all his books are like this, I can't wait to try another.
