4 stars. Why was this so short? I want more! The audiobook is movie length at 2h 30m so it went by incredibly fast. This could’ve been Game of Thrones audiobook length and I would still want more.
The writing is absolutely gorgeous. It’s very scenic and draws you in. I had no problem imagining the setting. Under the right hands, this could make a fantastic film. Binti is a nerd. She lives for math, codes and anything involving numbers. As part of the Himba tribe, that is their specialty. When Binti is offered the chance of a lifetime to study at Oomza University in the stars, she takes it even though it means leaving her family, her culture and understanding. The world Binti is entering has feuded with an alien race known as Meduse, but the Meduse won't stop until the Univeristy rights the wrong they committed against them.

I enjoyed learning about Binti's culture. I think that Binti's connection to her people and their traditions is one of the strongest aspects of this story. It was interesting seeing her navigate situations drawing on the comfort and strength of knowing who she is.
It's a quick read. Sadly, that does make it difficult to develop both the characters and the plot. There were parts that had to be told through narrative, particularly towards the end, which made the story feel ungrounded to me. It reso ...more

The length of this story is too short for the scope and the amount of detail that is being attempted. Binti is an interesting character, wanting to go to university and see the wider world but remaining rooted to her beliefs and culture at the same time.
It seemed like a lot was happening too quickly.
Having said that, the fact that the story was shaped by the imagination of the author's 11 yo daughter is worthy of consideration. I think I will read the sequels to know more about Binti. ...more

3.5 stars
This is a highly original story, and the best part of it all is the world-building. It is fascinating and so full of life, and diverse. I would have loved to have the time to explore it more. It is really short, it is almost like an introduction to a series because we have so much going on in there if we talk about the world-building and the background, while the story is pretty straightforward. But not in a bad way, I enjoyed it and I enjoyed the characters. Binti is a smart young girl ...more

There was a lot in this story in spite of it being so short. I think it used it's time very well and did a very good job world building, especially for such a short book. I liked how the author was able to really go into Binti's culture and her people's relationship with technology and water vs. otjize that her people use instead to clean themselves. The other cultures weren't gone into as well but I think in the time this book gave itself it did a very good job and it going to be a series, so i

Binti is a story I had heard about time and time again. Everyone was talking about it and raving about it, so I bought it a number of years ago and well… yes I am just not getting around to reading it because well things happen. But that’s the good thing about books right? Always there waiting for you!
