I've been seeing this book all over my feed for awhile now, so I thought what the heck let's just go for it. And I won't lie, I almost gave up on it in the beginning because I just couldn't get into it. It just dragged so much and Saeris was obnoxious. I could not fathom how people were giving this book 5 stars. But I stuck it out and I am glad that I did because once it ramped up, it never stopped and I finally understood the love. Saeris and Kingfisher were the MC of the story. It is told from Saeris' POV. Kingfisher was that hurt character that lashed out at everyone but suffered to protect them. Saeris is tough as nails and secret rebel. Carrion was hilarious, Ren and Lorreth were the backbone and steadfast friends. Everlayne...well she's the token soft female i guess. Just to preface: I’m not a fan of this genre, so I came into this book already nursing a slight bias against it. But damn, it still managed to impress me in how thoroughly mediocre and underwhelming it was. To even call it a romance novel feels generous. It’s a cringeworthy insta-lust fest between two cardboard cutouts with zero chemistry. The first 40% or so was a bit of a slog for me, but that last 60%? So worth it.
