I've been seeing this book all over my feed for awhile now, so I thought what the heck let's just go for it. And I won't lie, I almost gave up on it in the beginning because I just couldn't get into it. It just dragged so much and Saeris was obnoxious. I could not fathom how people were giving this book 5 stars. But I stuck it out and I am glad that I did because once it ramped up, it never stopped and I finally understood the love. But again, it shouldn't take to almost the 60% mar More like 3.5

I could not fathom how people were giving this book 5 stars. But I stuck it out and I am glad that I did because once it ramped up, it never stopped and I finally understood the love. But again, it shouldn't take to almost the 60% mark to get good.

Saeris comes from a world where water is rationed and she lives in the lowest of low sectors. She's basically just trying to survive and keep her brother alive. Well, things don't go her way and she gets caught stealing, arrested, almost killed and ends up in a magical world with the fae who she thought didn't exist. Enter Kingfisher (who I will never call by that again and will only call him Fisher), the fae who saves her. He's pretty much a dick from the beginning. But Saeris can do something that no one in a very long while can do - she can manipulate Quicksilver. Which makes her very important. We then spend chapters upon chapters of them arguing about why she can't go home and her whining and some weird sexual tension thrown in that we're supposed to believe, oh and there's a really cute fox that comes in (love Onyx).

Finally when Fisher takes Saeris to his home is where we get to the good stuff and the characters start to grow. I really liked seeing Saeris come into her own and really own her powers and want to know more about them. The addition of Carrion was the breather we all needed because everything was just so maudlin with these two. To be honest, the side characters stole the show - Carrion, Ren, Loreth. It became this story of found family which I am 100% here for and that's where the story thrived. It was here where I started forming connections so when people were in peril, I cared.

The reveals at the end were insane. The just kept coming. Carrion - what?? I am so intrigued as to what comes next that I will definitely be picking up the next book. But I just hope the pacing issues are fixed. This one needed heavier editing to smooth it out more because that beginning was ROUGH.

Saeris and Kingfisher were the MC of the story. It is told from Saeris' POV. Kingfisher was that hurt character that lashed out at everyone but suffered to protect them. Saeris is tough as nails and secret rebel. Carrion was hilarious, Ren and Lorreth were the backbone and steadfast friends. Everlayne...well she's the token soft female i guess. Just to preface: I’m not a fan of this genre, so I came into this book already nursing a slight bias against it. But damn, it still managed to impress me in how thoroughly mediocre and underwhelming it was. To even call it a romance novel feels generous. It’s a cringeworthy insta-lust fest between two cardboard cutouts with zero chemistry.
