I am a sucker for Norse fantasy. I absolutely loved everything about this book. The one area I thought it was lacking, and thus not a full 5 stars, is the world building. Everything else though *chef kiss*

I enjoyed this new series about a woman named Freya whose dream is to become a warrior and fight for her land against the Nordelanders. Freya is known to all lands to be the shield maiden after she inadvertently discloses it after meeting Bjorn. During that meeting her husband Vragi is murdered. This is the story of Freya who is fated by the Gods but doesn't know it.
I found this story really interesting because you don't HAVE to know Norse mythology going into it because it gives you just enough detail. I like that Freya fights to be a good person even though those around her do not care about her and only want to use her. I loved the slow romance in the book even though the ending didn't go like I liked but it makes sense because it is only book one and if it went the way I was thi ...more

4 stars. I'm surprised at how much I liked this! I went in with no expectations and just enjoyed the ride. Freya is kinda of an idiot. She's one of those heroines that the author tries really, really hard to make them seem bad ass but then it comes across as goofy because they're always making stupid decisions. That's Freya.
