Great preface:
Q:
The old gods may be great, but they are neither kind nor merciful. They are fickle, unsteady as moonlight on water, or shadows in a storm. If you insist on calling them, take heed: be careful what you ask for, be willing to pay the price. … And no matter how desperate or dire, never pray to the gods that answer after dark. (c)

Oh my heart. This is one of those stories that speaks to your heart, breaks it, and then puts it back together again. Its characters live out the longings and fears of its readers: the desire to live outside the limits; to find love that is bigger than themselves; the fear that they will never leave a mark. I came to this book with no expectations, and left with a new favorite.
