This is a Romeo and Juliet retelling, set in Shanghai in the 1920’s. But with a plague and monsters.
Loved the monster and madness sweeping through. The politics were so heavy in here though, and literally peppered everything. I find politics to be a pace killer and they’re really not my thing. It really took me a long time to finish this book, because it does start glacially slow. And I thought going in I wouldn’t love it, but I was willing to have my mind changed. So other than their names and being in rival gangs to call this a Romeo and Juliet retelling felt like a real stretch for me. Unless you’re really familiar with the play you might not even notice the nods here and there for the most part. The plot went back and forth between being a somewhat annoying and predictable romance to what I thought was a pretty cool storyline but then there was also the weaving in of the Nationalists vs the Communists and the revival gangs.
