The writing style of this really rubbed me up the wrong way. I am so disappointed- it sounded great on paper but unfortunately didn’t fulfill me in any way.
4.5/5
Well this is now my favorite Romeo & Juliet retelling ever.
These Violent Delights takes us to a fantasy Shanghai were rival gangs fight over control of the city. As the blood feud rages, outside forces have come to Shanghai to try and take over. It will come down to Juliette Cai and Roma Montagov to figure out what the rumors of a monster and madness mean and who is responsible.

A blood feud between two gangs leaves the city a mess. Juliette Cai has returned back to Shanghai as the heir of the Scarlet Gang while their heir of the rival gang, Roma Montagov, has also returned. When both sides start showing sides of instability, Juliette and Roma set everything aside to try and stop the mayhem and save the city.

Here’s the thing about retellings: we as readers are familiar with the route the story will take. It is up to the author to give us a story that is similar enough to be recognizable and yet different enough to be intriguing. I think this book did an amazing job of that!!
It gave us a backdrop of 1920’s Shanghai, a monster lurking in the shadows that forced enemies to "work together", and a large rivalry done between the families with both personal and business backstory’s. The changes done to th ...more

To be fair I'm not going to rate this because I only got about 1/4 of the way in and lost interest. It has sat on my nightstand for the past 3 days and I've had no desire to pick it up and continue reading. It's not the book, it's me. I don't have a huge interest in retellings (especially Shakespeare), enemies to lovers (rivals..whatever), or gangs. It had 3 strikes going in, but I still gave it a try. I may decide to give it another try at another time, but for right now, I'm handing the book b

Romeo and Juliet reimagined as heirs to rival gangs with a blood feud in 1920's Shanghai... that was the combination that drew me to this book!
The Chinese Cai family (Scarlet gang) and the Russian Montagov family (White flower gang) have been controlling Shanghai for years. With the increase of foreigners in the city, claiming parts of it for themselves, both families are struggling to hold onto their power.

I was happy that it was seeming like a standalone, leaving the sequel to be about something else, but it seems not 😑 I liked how it was planned, but I didn't like how the whole next book is probably going to be about miscommunication. I wish they were all in on the plot and were still going to be working together

I started to read this book previously but it didn't grasp my interest. I decided to try the audiobook since this is a highly rated book. The narrator was Cindy Kay and I thought she was decent. The story itself was dull to me and it was difficult to pay attention. I didn't bond with the characters even though this book is plenty long enough for that to happen. Obviously, this is a Romeo and Juliet retelling but it just didn't do it for me.
