Wow! Just WOW!!!!!
I tried to go into this novel with average expectations. I worried that the hype for this book was going to ruin my experience. I've read and loved work by Kristin Hannah before, but this one honestly intimidated me because of how LOVED it is by most.
This book was powerful. It was heartbreaking and impactful. It is deserving of every single bit of hype it has received in the last six years, and should probably receive more.

Pidin kyllä kirjasta ja se piti otteessa. Kerronta oli jouhevaa pääasiassa ja tarinat oli todella koskettavia. Välillä kuitenkin koin paikoitellen pientä hetkittäistä tylsistymistä, eli paikoitellen olisi voinut hypätä seuraavaan kohtaan nopeammin. Aluksi pidin enemmän Isabellen kertomista kohdista mutta lopulta molempien sisarusten kertoma tarina oli hyvä ja tärkeä pitää mielessä. Sota oli sotaa myös niille jotka eivät taistelleet rintamalla vaan kotipuolessa. Loppupuolesta pidin koska o ...more

Maybe I'm just in a reading slump. That could be it. Or maybe it's the lack of sleep I've been getting lately. I'm not completely sure. Either way, I had a hard time getting into the story of this book. I wasn't pulled in like I thought I would be. Maybe I just had high expectations, so when they didn't meet those expectations, it wasn't good. I really don't know why I didn't love this book when I usually love WWII novels. WOW!
As a person of Jewish descent, it's always hard reading about WW2 and this was no exception. It was very emotional, powerful, and thought-provoking. The prose was embedded with themes about love, suffering, and growing up and I enjoyed the pacing and different POVs.
