While I still really enjoyed this the second time around, I also found myself to be more critical of the story and have brought the rating down from a solid 4 to a 3.5.
Carry On, for those who don't know, is a fanfiction that was talked about in her previous book Fangirl. So it's a fanfiction that was written by a character in a previous book, but it's also a fanfiction that is based on Harry Potter, but now it's released in its own novel form. Confused yet? I understood going in that this was a bit of a farce--making fun of the whole "Chosen One" plot and mixing elements from several modern series using the trope, most notably Harry Potter. Most of these "borrowed" pieces were entertaining, but the silly spells annoyed me to no end. Every time one was used I was pulled out of the plot. The rest of the story moves so well, but that felt a little like beating a dead horse as things went on. It was just too much.

Meh. I expected this to be at least somewhat fun but found it boring. I mean, I know it's fiction-within-fiction , but seriously, I really didn't enjoy any aspect of it at all. Didn't hate it, but didn't enjoy it either.

This book was absolutely delightful. And, I think, the only Rainbow Rowell book I have ever read that does that little bit of fluff after the finale, which brought me no small amount of joy. Rowell's take on the "Chosen One" myth is absolutely fantastic, and I won't get too much into it for fear of spoilers. But I also like the pervasive story beneath it all, of Simon trying to figure out what it is exactly that will make him happy. And what he's actually looking for.
