What Members Thought
Starr’s dad said that names are important, and this is so true for her—she definitely shines bright, just like a star, even in the darkness surrounding her. Especially in the darkness. I love that she was able to find her voice through the course of this story—voices are a powerful weapon, as she learns. This was such a heavy and hard read (I had to switch to an audio recording for many chapters), but it’s so worth it.

This was a fantastic read which I think is not only extremely topical and relevant today but it is very thought provoking. And the author does a brilliant job portraying these characters in what I think is an honest way.

The raw honesty, the realism and the gripping characters make this book a must read. For an outsider looking in, it’s important to see both sides and try to understand the struggles and straight up disrespect that other cultures face. This book is incredible and thought provoking and everything I ever needed in a book. It’s so well thought out and well written, I would give it 100 stars if I could.
Great book about racism. The conflicts were mostly internal so it made the book very contemplative and deep. I loved the way the author showed starr's feelings and her shame of living in the hood, and then took it and transformed it through the book.
