What Members Thought

Penny Well Reads
Rating Clarification: 2.5 stars

Based on the reviews, I was expecting much more from this book.

There are things I have to admit I liked though.

I liked that the characters weren't as superficial as they were in the first book and that there is a show of emotions here. Also, I did love Celeana's dog.

However, the rest of the plot didn't interest me, the things that happened seemed so random I lost interest on the story and I had to force myself to keep reading.
It improved towards the end of the book

Without having read it, I’ve been quite snooty and I suppose disparaging about what I thought this series would be like. Well I was pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of the first book. This book has raised the status of this series in my mind. The magic and world building really developed and Celeana was shown to have more depth of character. I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes

*Review after re-read:

Thoroughly enjoyed this re-read and I feel like it was necessary. I honestly had forgot a lot that happens in this book so I'm glad I picked it up. Not going to lie, this is still tied as my favorite book in the series along with Queen of Shadows. The writing is still not my favorite but the story really gets going and I really enjoyed the twists and turns she took with thi

I'm beginning to really get into this series. I like Celaena, how strong, smart, and cunning she is. Chaol and Dorian are great, though I'm team Chaol for sure ;) I like the parts about magic and few and I hope we see more of that in the future! (view spoiler) That ending! Now I definitely have to rea ...more

Sept 8, 2023: I think I loved this book even more during this reread and I am bumping my rating up to 5 stars. I loved the character developments, relationship developments, and story progression. I loved Choal, Dorian, and Celaena. I'm particularly excited for the next book.

ALL MY SHIPS SUNK AND THE ANNOYING THING IS, I CAN'T BE MAD ABOUT WHY THE SUNK BECAUSE THE REASONS FOR THEIR SINKING ARE REASONABLE.

Also, this is a book that makes you forget you have work to do. This is a stay-up-late-get-up-early-so-I-can-read-it type of book. It will consume your every thought. It will plague your being. You will come up with scenarios about how it will end, or what will happen to your ships next, or struggles and challenges that each character will face and then you will be

There are honestly no words to describe this book, I stayed up until 2 am just so I could finish it.

The beginning was slow going and it seemed to be more about the political agendas of the ruling family. But as you get into the heart of the story it picks up and Maas completely blows you away.
