This Elm Creek Quilt book is a little more meaty than most of the books in the series. I would call this book more of a Historical Fiction as it deals with the Civil War in South Carolina as well as slavery. The story is about Joanna a run away slave that makes it to Elm Creek,PA only to be captured and returned to her master. Her life, trials and tribulations are told in a way that make them seem very real . 4 stars
A continuation of the story from The Runaway Quilt - what happened when the slavers took Joanna back to Virginia and Anneke claimed Joanna's son as the twin to her son. I do wish that Ms. Chiaverini had reminded us what the twins names were, I had to go back to Runaway Quilt to find the answer.
As usual, reading her work inspired me to get back to work on my own quilts. ...more

I liked this better than the other books by Jennifer Chiaverini that I've tried. Too often I'm bored by her characters and her writing. This book was very intense. The torture of the slaves was really hard to read, but I thought the author did a great job of bringing this horrible time in our history to life.

The latest in one of my favorite author's series. Civil War era from the view point of a slave. Loved it
