Enjoy the ride. There is no destination. Don't, like me, go into this naively expecting "The Berlin Stories" to resemble Cabaret. There are several precursors, to be sure, including the deliciously flighty Sally Bowles. But this is more a historical reflection on a particular time and place than a novel with a structured plot. What it will do, however, is transport you to the roiling, pre-Nazi Berlin with Isherwood's deft, if formal, writing. ...more
