Still thinking about how much I hated this book after 2+ years, lol. A self-satisfied and self-congratulatory plotless mess where all the characters are juvenile angsty vignettes with a few racist caricatures thrown in, which still somehow receives rave reviews.

I really love Seanan's work. Love it to death. But... this I didn't love.
This book left me cold for reasons I both can and can't explain. It wasn't a bad book, but neither was it the phenomenal read on a subject I thought she'd both give both life and love to. Disappointing, in a word. Not because it's bad, but because it's merely okay.

Creative fantasy-horror novella about a boarding school to help teens readjust to our "reality" after traveling to magical worlds. The premise is a good metaphor for adolescents' struggle with parents who don't accept the person they're becoming, as we see in the storyline with trans boy student Kade. Genre-wise, a crossover book for adults or YA readers who aren't put off by gore. I only wish the book had been longer, as the conclusion felt rushed compared to the world-building. I'm interested
