(This is a re-read after a few decades)
A science fiction Grapes of Wrath in both good ways and bad. The “religious” aspect is interesting, but feels tacked on at times. I wish there was more attention to the hyperempathy aspect. Still, though, excellently written and far more prescient than you’ll be comfortable with. Recommended.

Butler did an excellent job of adapting the writing style from the beginning of the novel until the end to show growth in the voice of the protagonist, Lauren. The work is unsettling because of how realistic a dystopia she creates not so far into the future. It asks the reader to question under what circumstances they would want to live, whether they could let go of the hold that hope for a return to old ways brings, what they would be willing to do to survive.
