Notes for the next time I teach this book:
--Skip / Summarize the first 150 pages; they're great and beautiful worldbuilding, every word matters, and, as one student said, the rest of the book won't make as much sense without the first part. B U T it's a slow start and students hate slow starts.
--Begin with the real-world parallels and build out from there. Maybe teams and each group has to watch for one of the Big Four (climate change, sexism, racism, class warfare)?
--Focus more on the parables ...more

Butler did an excellent job of adapting the writing style from the beginning of the novel until the end to show growth in the voice of the protagonist, Lauren. The work is unsettling because of how realistic a dystopia she creates not so far into the future. It asks the reader to question under what circumstances they would want to live, whether they could let go of the hold that hope for a return to old ways brings, what they would be willing to do to survive.
