What Members Thought
It's all very well using a #blacklivesmatter but what does that really mean ? This book tells you. This is why we should all try to read diversely so we can find out about how it feels to grow up as a black boy in Baltimore. There is anger and sadness in this story but also great beauty and incredible poetry. It's so deeply moving, for once you can believe the hype.

I have heard Ta-Nehisi do a lot of interviews for various podcasts (Fresh Air, Studio 360, etc). and agreed with what he said...and found him interesting. When I saw the book I thought "One day"...and then I saw I had to read a book of letters and decided to give this one the time it needed. Mr. Coates writes a letter to his son about the what it means to grow up as a black man in the United States and the fears he has for his son. This should be required reading for any US History, Civics, or English class. It was a difficult read. It made me uncomfortable like nothing I've read before (and I'm grateful for it). And it gave me a long list of "required reading" from authors and activists mentioned.
