This was written around 1860 with Victorian England as the setting. Like other books of its time, it has soap-opera-like coincidences. It is told by multiple narrators (a few have big roles while others are small) who officially "document" the story. This gives the story a sense of authenticity, at least for 19th-century readers.

I didn't know much about this book, the first Wilkie Collins I have read. All I had heard was that despite the immense size, it is quite fast paced, and overall intriguing. Yes, buried in all the repetitive talk there was a "mystery." When I finally learns the "secret" that was being protected, I no longer cared. The primary evil doer dies before his comeuppance can be served. If he doesn't care anymore, why do I? This victorian era novel is dreadful. No one speaks directly. If it can be said in a paragra ...more
