The Korean island of Jeju has long been a geographic stepping stone. Prior to World War II, the Japanese had colonized the area; during the war, the inhabitants worried that their location would mean invasion from the Americans. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was long, but so engaging and well-written. It was set on the Korean island of Teju (I will check my spelling later--since I listened to it on audio, I did not get to see the words/names), a place where haenyeo (women who dive deep into the sea to collect seafood to support their families) hold incredible autonomy and share a powerful sense of community. Lisa See is one of the best authors and one of my favorites. There is not a single book of hers that I don’t enjoy or learn fascinating things from - and this book is no exception. I love that her focus is on Asian culture - the history of which I’m not that familiar with.

This story spans several decades and delves into the dynamics of the impact of war in this town (the Korean island of Jeju) and the relationships of the characters. I had to research all about the women of Jeju for myself too after I read the book and
