Even while reading Atonement, I had a hard time deciding what I thought of it. I probably should have written a review when it was more fresh in my mind, but I think I'm in the minority here. I still can't decide what I really thought of it, but it didn't exactly blow me away.

Atonement was the first McEwan novel I read, and if the rest are more of the same, I think I might have to pass. The setting was a good choice, and gave him a lot to work with. I enjoyed the plot, and the characters, partic

I hated the first half. I know why I hated it. There's a sense of impeding doom and it's far too flowering. So, of course, I blame Briony. The second half is far more enjoyable, sharing the aftermath of Briony's overactive and revengeful imagination. I didn't particularly like the movie so it would make sense that I didn't particularly like the book. The sense of senseless injustice distracts me completely from enjoying the characters or the story. ...more

Brilliant writing, beautiful narration, interesting commentary on the art of writing. Excellent choice for a book club...lots to talk about!

I rather enjoyed this psychological suspense novel. A domestic crisis becomes a crime story and changes the lives of a middle class family in 1935 England. The ramifications go clear into World War Two. I enjoyed the narrative and would definitely consider reading another novel by McEwan. Just a bit of language and smut.
