I picked up this book as part of a grab bag sale at a local community center, having never read it in school and thinking maybe I ought to. Turns out, I didn't miss anything by not reading it in school, although I would have traded one of the times I was made to suffer through 'Heart of Darkness' for 'Lord of the Flies'. I read this book in the 8th grade and as far as I remember it was the first book that used symbolism, metaphor etc. My mind had to; for the first time; wrap around a story with one plot, but so many other hidden meanings. I don't know if I got as much out of it then because now it seems like it is just a thin veil of a story to cover the authors true agenda.
